As I entered the dramatic corridor of this haven for my back massage, I couldn’t get the song “Shambala” out of my head!

“Shambala” is a song written by Daniel Moore and made famous by two almost simultaneous releases in 1973, the better-known but slightly later Three Dog Night version, which reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and a lesser-known version by B.W. Stevenson. The song is about the mythical kingdom of Shambhala, said to be hidden somewhere within or beyond the peaks of the Himalayas and mentioned in various ancient texts, including the Kalachakra Tantra and ancient texts of Tibetan Buddhism. The phrases “in the halls of Shambala” and “on the road to Shambala” tie for number of occurrences in the lyrics. The latter phrase perhaps alludes to the idea of Shambala not as a physical place but as a metaphor for the spiritual path one might follow. The lyrics refer to a situation where kindness and cooperation are universal, joy and good fortune abound, and psychological burdens are lifted.

Wash away my troubles, wash away my pain
With the rain in Shambala
Wash away my sorrow, wash away my shame
With the rain in Shambala

Everyone is helpful, everyone is kind
On the road to Shambala
Everyone is lucky, everyone is so kind
On the road to Shambala

How does your light shine, in the halls of Shambala?
I can tell my sister by the flowers in her eyes
On the road to Shambala
I can tell my brother by the flowers in his eyes
On the road to Shambala

How does your light shine, in the halls of Shambala?

The Tinker Bean in Walmer for your next coffee fix.

The Tinker Bean in Walmer for your next coffee fix.

Visit The Tinker Bean, not far from us in Walmer, for quality coffee and scrumptious eats in a relaxed, child-friendly atmosphere.
Arjenique realised her dream and opened The Tinker Bean in March 2014, adding to a string of interesting businesses along Main Road, Walmer, Port Elizabeth.  The Tinker Bean offers a lovely spread of light meals, decent sized portions at decent prices with their Dutch chicken croquettes, homemade burger patties and Dutch apple pie fast becoming favourites. Arjenique tinkers in the kitchen and makes delicious Dutch butter cookies as well as her range of basil dressings and chocolate covered coffee beans. When we popped in she’d just finished making some fudge …mmm…On the subject of coffee, good strong Ciro coffee is their choice at The Tinker Bean; they tinker with the coffee bean to produce the finest.

With a farmstyle feel to this spacious old Walmer home, Arjenique has created a child-friendly environment offering an indoor playroom and a garden of toys and activites for the little people. For the bigger people, the indoor fireplace is welcome warmth on the chilly winter days.

Starting in September, kiddies’ arts and crafts are on offer with Nici at R40 per child per session. (Contact Nici on: o72 364 8954, see photo advert below) They hope to soon introduce cooking classes for children. In a room down the passage a great selection of new and second hand baby accessories are for sale.

Also available are select items from “Tinseltown Crafty Gifts and Decor”. Tinseltown is down the driveway and behind  Cobblestone Bakery on 6th Avenue, Walmer.

Colour explosion at Wezandla Arts and Craft Gallery, Port Elizabeth.

Needing a burst of energy? Needing to see, smell, touch and feel Africa?  Consider then visiting “Wezandla Arts and Craft Gallery”- Port Elizabeth’s largest African craft centre. This gallery pulses with African energy, vibrant colour explosions with wall to wall craftmanship. Adding to the mix is an aromatic coffee swirl in the air and decadent carrot and chocolate cakes for the sweet tooth.

For diverse, fascinating gifts with an African flavour, take  your time strolling through “Wezandla Arts and Craft Gallery”. They cater for local South Africans going abroad as well as visitors from around the globe. They boast a wide collection of wire craft, wooden carvings, t-shirts, tablecloths as well as transitional art (goodies made from recycled materials) hand-painted eggs, a wall of African masks, assorted handbags, cushion covers, coasters, cosmetic bags made from springbuck, buffalo and antelope skins and heavily laden tables holding shweshwe fabrics. Bead and wire items as well as corporate gifts with an African touch can be made to your specifications. Wezandla is the official stockist of Ardmore products. Wow Wezandla! So much on offer!

The formal name for shweshwe is ‘indigo-dyed discharge printed fabric’. Historians claim that indigo cloth arrived in Africa more than 2000 years ago, was used as trade goods by the Arabs and Indians. It really took off in South Africa when German settlers introduced it to the Xhosa people in the mid 1800s. Shweshwe is a stiff cotton fabric that initially came from India and was heavily starched to fight off the damp in the ships’ storage compartments as it crossed the ocean to the Eastern Cape.
Xhosa women took a look at these wondrous bolts of cloth, fell in love with the shweshwe fabric and made it their own.

The finest mohair right here at Hinterveld, Eastern Cape, SA.

The finest mohair right here at Hinterveld, Eastern Cape, SA.

Along with fellow PEMBBA members ( Port Elizabeth Bed and Breakfast Metro Association) we were recently taken on a fascinating tour of all three mills at Hinterveld: Gubb & Inggs, the processing and combing mill, Mohair Spinners South Africa and Hinterveld Weaving Mill. Hinterveld is part of the Stucken group of companies, a natural fibre business focusing on mohair and merino wool, they produce luxurious premium ranges of blankets, scarves and throws.

“The Karoo sprawls over 40% of South Africa’s landmass, a warm dry heart at the country’s centre. The Karoo produces 13 million kg of South Africa’s 44 million kg of wool. It also produces all of South Africa’s 2.3 million kg of mohair – around 50% of the world’s production – from some 668 000 Angora goats.” (Words by Julienne du Toit of Karoo Space
Hinterveld means ‘the land behind’ and refers to this vast, dry plains Karoo area behind the Southern Cape escarpment, where the Angora goats thrive in hot, dry summers, cold winters and semi-desert vegetation. The majority of local mohair is produced in the Eastern Cape in Jansenville and the surrounding districts, this is within a 200km radius of Hinterveld Mohair Mills in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Hinterveld is a dedicated weaver of premium mohair, an international leader in mohair buying, trading and processing; the world’s most sought-after supplier of luxury mohair blankets, throws and accessories and it’s all done right here in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro!

Mohair, the fleece of the Angora, is one of the world’s most exclusive natural fibres. South African mohair is acknowledged to be of the finest quality available internationally. Mohair is warm and lightweight, it is often blended with wool, it also has a lustrous shine to it and absorbs dyes very well. All of this we bore witness to as we meandered around the mills, taking in the fascinating information from our tour guide Jackie Gant. The processing of mohair and merino wool starts with the raw, unwashed, matted hair and wool. Bale after bale of wool is fed through various washing and combing machines – the machinery is huge and very noisy! The end result of the various processes is exquisitely fine and fabulously soft mohair products. Many of these are on sale at Hinterveld Factory shop on site, as well as at their Mohair and Wool Factory Shop, corner 5th Avenue and Heugh Road, Walmer, Port Elizabeth.

Blankets and throws are valuable and precious treasures in the African culture, from the corn blankets of the Sotho, to the burnt orange blankets of the Xhosa and the colourful blankets of the Ndebele.
Laduma Ngxokolo, a globally praised knitwear designer, has collaborated with Hinterveld to design a range of Mohair blankets that allows Xhosa pride to meet contemporary elegance. The range is called: MaXhosa. Natural tones of earthy browns and rich blues are expressions of the natural beauty of the Eastern Cape landscape, met with vibrant cameos of colour that are unique to Xhosa culture and its people.
