Superb coffees out and about in Walmer.

Superb coffees out and about in Walmer.

Dempsey’s Guest House is surrounded by delicious coffee pit stops, we are spoilt for coffee choice in Walmer.

Urban Espress owner, Donovan McLagan, National Cup Taster Champion has won the national title for fourth time in seven years. Dozens of people from regions across the country participated in the Speciality Coffee Association of Southern Africa Barista Championships, held in Cape Town earlier this year. McLagan will be heading to Dubai in September to battle it out against the best coffee specialists from 42 different countries. McLagan, a former engineer, gave up his job more than 10 years ago to start up his growing passion. “On a trip to New Zealand in 2004, I realised how big the coffee culture is over there and decided to make my own coffee, grinding my own beans, and it kind of just spiralled into a business from there,” he said.

Sizzling food events are hot and happening at “The Food Studio.”

The gem collection in Walmer is growing. Lecia de Villiers and Andrew Broughton, the owners of  “The Food Studio” have brought an exciting new twist to the world of food experiences, a welcome new dimension to dining in Port Elizabeth. They share a passion for fine food and cooking and aim to bring people together simply by having them socialize in the kitchen while preparing, cooking and enjoying fine food.

Their kitchen was launched in September 2017 with their first trial experience on 15 July 2017. Since the launch The Food Studio has been abuzz with creative dining events, themed evenings, food demonstrations by chefs and cooks, private dining and food pairing experiences. Their ‘in house’ chefs are Vuyani Nkwali and Mike Mallet with the recent addition of Chef Erika Grebe.

The Food Studio can accommodate 12 to 40 people, smaller groups around the kitchen table and larger groups can spread into the dining area and outside deck area. It is not a restaurant operating on a daily basis, it is rather a ‘food event’ company offering a variety of food-related functions custom made to your requirements, per bookings only. They advertise regular food events; past events have been these sizzlers:
Ultimate Meat Feast
Seafood Extravaganza
Degustation
All things cheezy!
Culinary Kids at The Food Studio
Couples Sharing Night
An evening with Vuyani Nkwali
Taste Sensation
All Things Chocolate

We attended the ‘All Things Chocolate’ event and enjoyed every second of the evening and devoured every last crumb of the decadent meals served. It was a sheer delight to have the chefs in the kitchen and cooking for us, making it a memorable evening of fun and fine dining with special friends.

Welcome colour added to Walmer Boulevard.

Welcome colour added to Walmer Boulevard.

A dreary old municipal building on Walmer Boulevard was recently given new life. A fresh coat of paint and some creative input draws attention to a somewhat interestingly-shaped building…penguin included! It’s a pity we can’t provide a ‘before’ photograph which would demonstrate the transformation.

(Search on Google maps for a ‘before’ photo:  Shell-Traingle Service Station, 177 Walmer Blvd, South End. Building is just to the right of service station )

We love colour!

Always ready with a broad smile and a friendly wave, Wilson Mthalane’s spot for selling his beautiful roses is on the corner of 6th Avenue and Heugh Road in Walmer. He can be seen usually on Fridays and often during the week when he walks the intersection cheerfully interacting with motorists while selling his roses. He hails from Ladismith and enjoys his job which puts bread on the table for his family of six. Wilson is a ray of sunshine to many a moody motorist.

Bee friendly at Dempsey’s Guest House.

Bee friendly at Dempsey’s Guest House.

On a few occasions over the years bees have moved into our irrigation system at Dempsey’s Guest House, not without drama. The recent safe removal of them ended with the beekeeper offering to place a bee hive in our garden. We hope this will become their new home and working place and that the irrigation system might have a chance to work again once the drought has broken.

A look inside Mohair SA HQ on 6th Ave.

Make time to visit the Mohair SA Headquarters on 6th Avenue, just up the road from us in Walmer, Port Elizabeth, you will not be disappointed. Shortly after Mohair SA moved into their newly constructed building last year, we shared photos and some information of the exterior and promised to return with a report on what’s inside at Mohair SA.

Last year’s link: http://dempseys.co.za/mohair-headquarters-now-in-our-neighbourhood/

Below are photos of the interior at Mohair SA. We were welcomed by friendly staff who took pride in educating us about their fine mohair products. Visitors to Mohair SA with a Nelson Mandela Bay pass, receive a free mohair gift, an Angora goat.

The unique qualities of mohair are described in their own words, taken from their website www.mohair.co.za

UNIQUE QUALITIES:-
•Lustre: the fibre’s natural lustre gives garments a silky sheen. It’s the ideal garment to wear day or night.
•Lightweight: the fabric is luxuriously lightweight and renowned for its versatility: cool in summer and warm in winter.
•Dye-responsive: mohair responds magnificently to dyes, retaining even the most brilliant colours over time.
•Climate control: mohair breathes, absorbing and realizing atmospheric moisture and controlling its own “climate” to ensure optimal comfort.
•Durability: because of its pliability, mohair is rated as one of the world’s most durable fibres.
•Crease resistant: products made from mohair have an innate elasticity, which ensures they hold their space.
•Non-flammable: mohair is virtually non-flammable, keeping you safe and chic all year round.

Pop in at “A Peace of Art” on Main Road, Walmer.

Pop in at “A Peace of Art” on Main Road, Walmer.

“A Peace of Art” operating from No. 85 Main Road, Walmer, has been busily on the go since 2005. They are stockists of a myriad crafty goodies for mosaicing, scrapbooking, beading, wiring, decoupage and pewter work etc. They use these crafts and arts as tools to assist people in realizing their endless potential, simultaneously incorporating the teaching of life skills. We popped in to have a cup of coffee and a cake at their wee coffee shop in the garden and we were delightfully surprised. A peaceful ambience filters throughout the well-maintained store with a buzz of creativity oozing from the craft workshop areas. We took a peep inside the Quilt Shop which is also on the premises and we were impressed by the variety of colours and designs available.

In their own words:

“We challenge people to look beyond the logic of the left brain to a deeper understanding of authentic creativity, thus no space is left for rigid steps to be followed. We specialize in personal and professional leadership working individually with every person. This makes the classes fun and relaxing where one can escape the day-to-day worries and find peace and tranquility. From kiddies programs to understanding of the deeper self through making a to-take-home craft/art work, these programmes are presented every day of the week as well as on Saturday mornings. We love people, so come and experience a “peace” of our (he)arts. Bring your troubles, let us mix them with paint and make good use of it, sending you home with a new outlook on the routine and stress of everyday life.”
