Please see their post and lovely photos: http://karoospace.co.za/advert/annette-oelofse-natural-fibre/

The finest mohair right here at Hinterveld, Eastern Cape, SA.

The finest mohair right here at Hinterveld, Eastern Cape, SA.

Along with fellow PEMBBA members ( Port Elizabeth Bed and Breakfast Metro Association) we were recently taken on a fascinating tour of all three mills at Hinterveld: Gubb & Inggs, the processing and combing mill, Mohair Spinners South Africa and Hinterveld Weaving Mill. Hinterveld is part of the Stucken group of companies, a natural fibre business focusing on mohair and merino wool, they produce luxurious premium ranges of blankets, scarves and throws.

“The Karoo sprawls over 40% of South Africa’s landmass, a warm dry heart at the country’s centre. The Karoo produces 13 million kg of South Africa’s 44 million kg of wool. It also produces all of South Africa’s 2.3 million kg of mohair – around 50% of the world’s production – from some 668 000 Angora goats.” (Words by Julienne du Toit of Karoo Space   www.karoospace.co.za)
Hinterveld means ‘the land behind’ and refers to this vast, dry plains Karoo area behind the Southern Cape escarpment, where the Angora goats thrive in hot, dry summers, cold winters and semi-desert vegetation. The majority of local mohair is produced in the Eastern Cape in Jansenville and the surrounding districts, this is within a 200km radius of Hinterveld Mohair Mills in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Hinterveld is a dedicated weaver of premium mohair, an international leader in mohair buying, trading and processing; the world’s most sought-after supplier of luxury mohair blankets, throws and accessories and it’s all done right here in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro!

Mohair, the fleece of the Angora, is one of the world’s most exclusive natural fibres. South African mohair is acknowledged to be of the finest quality available internationally. Mohair is warm and lightweight, it is often blended with wool, it also has a lustrous shine to it and absorbs dyes very well. All of this we bore witness to as we meandered around the mills, taking in the fascinating information from our tour guide Jackie Gant. The processing of mohair and merino wool starts with the raw, unwashed, matted hair and wool. Bale after bale of wool is fed through various washing and combing machines – the machinery is huge and very noisy! The end result of the various processes is exquisitely fine and fabulously soft mohair products. Many of these are on sale at Hinterveld Factory shop on site, as well as at their Mohair and Wool Factory Shop, corner 5th Avenue and Heugh Road, Walmer, Port Elizabeth.

Blankets and throws are valuable and precious treasures in the African culture, from the corn blankets of the Sotho, to the burnt orange blankets of the Xhosa and the colourful blankets of the Ndebele.
Laduma Ngxokolo, a globally praised knitwear designer, has collaborated with Hinterveld to design a range of Mohair blankets that allows Xhosa pride to meet contemporary elegance. The range is called: MaXhosa. Natural tones of earthy browns and rich blues are expressions of the natural beauty of the Eastern Cape landscape, met with vibrant cameos of colour that are unique to Xhosa culture and its people.
