Brioche for good coffee and good food

Another food and coffee gem about 2kms from us at Dempsey’s Guest House is “Brioche“. This spot is set in a quaint old Walmer house with warm wooden floors and high ceilings, it’s light and vibey, a great space in which to indulge in good food and good good Illy coffee. Decadent breakfasts, fresh crisp salads, carrot cake and cinnamon buns, pavlovas fit for royalty, cappuccinos to die for- and they’ve started baking traditional mosbolletjies on Saturdays …spoilt for choice!

So what is brioche? It is a highly enriched bread of French origin, the high egg and butter content gives it a rich and tender crumb. It is light and slightly puffy. It has a dark, golden, and flaky crust, frequently accentuated by an egg wash applied after proofing. Brioche is commonly eaten at breakfast or as a snack —  is often cooked with fruit or chocolate chips and served as a pastry or as the basis of a dessert with many local variations in added ingredients, fillings or toppings.  Brioche is eaten with dessert or tea, but also has numerous uses in cuisine. Common brioche dough is suitable for coulibiac and fillet of beef en croute
