The Cape Recife Lighthouse can be found at Cape Recife, the western point of Algoa Bay. The structure was built in 1851 to warn mariners of this treacherous piece of coastline near Port Elizabeth. The Cape Recife Lighthouse is an octagonal masonry tower and rises 24 metres high making its light beam visible from 29 miles away. Cape Recife is formed by a large rocky spine which juts menacingly out and into the Indian Ocean off the western tip of the bay. This lighthouse is situated in a nature reserve which is about 15 kms from Dempsey’s Guest House. You can visit Cape Recife for more reasons than just viewing a 160 year old lighthouse. Cape Recife boasts some of the finest examples of coastal fynbos along this coast. It has a prolific birdlife and the area is also popular with fishermen.
