Please be advised that Fischer’s Art Gallery will be closing. This should be effective as from 15th September 2014. Until then we will be open but mainly to give back art works on display. Kind regards, Deirdre Moser Fischer’s Art Gallery is a stop along the Route 67 Art Works walk. Having been established since 1862, Fischer’s Jewellers is one of the oldest entrenched jewellers in South Africa. The original Fischer’s building in Govan Mbeki Avenue, Port Elizabeth was transformed into an exquisite Gallery. Its unique Art Nouveau architecture houses a stunning display of Fine Art and Giftware and is well worth a visit. Ask to use their beautiful lift, take a ride up to the third floor for a view of the old city down below. What a treat – the lift is one of the oldest working lifts in South Africa! It originally had a handle to ‘start and stop’ and there was a ‘lift driver’, who wore white gloves! In recent times the street level front of the shop has been changed but the wood-panelled interior and luxuriously rich wooden floors are the originals. (Deirdre is still looking for a lamp shade fitting that will fit the existing fitting in the lift -their electrician says to give up looking.
